Lordship management is a broad subject scarcely treated by historians; even when analysed, it has never been the object of exhaustive reconstructions and systematic surveys. The article provides a first, provisional overview of the main forms of lordship administration that changed depending on the period, region, lordship, type of revenue and many other factors. The Weberian notion of ideal type is particularly helpful in order to try to master the multiplicity and variety of forms of administration used in practice. On its basis, the essay identifies two basic ideal types, 'Direct Management' and 'Indirect Management', which are in turn divided into five sub-ideal types. Lastly, it questions the economic and social effects of each form of management, and the possibility of identifying, depending on the period and region, a more or less extensive diffusion of lordships attributable to the different ideal types.

In the Historia de situ Ambrosianae urbis, written in the early fourteenth century, the notary Giovanni of Cermenate offered an unprecedented tripartite image of the Milanese contado: Seprio, north-west; Martesana, north-east; and a third indefinite "part" which can be identified with the plain south of the city, not exactly defined by Giovanni of Cermenate. The paper investigates such an absence, by linking it to the general weakness of collective identities provoked by the extraordinary economic development of the low Milanese plain.

The essay analyzes a judicial case of the Mercanzia court in the early Quattrocento Florence, which involved the execution of an insurance deed by the merchant and poet Cino Rinuccini concerning the date of the death of Ladislaus king of Naples in 1414. The case, considering the relevance of the actor and the subject of the insurance agreement, allows us to study the discussion on the legal and ethical value of such deeds. The Appendix provides the edition of a legal consilium devoted to the case, in which a distinguished commission of lawyers discusses the problem according to the interpretation of the ius commune.

How do marginalized communities across the globe use the medieval past to combat racism, educate the public, and create a just world? Jonathan Hsy advances urgent academic and public conversations about race and appropriations of the medieval past in popular culture and the arts. Examining poetry, fiction, journalism, and performances, Hsy shows how cultural icons such as Frederick Douglass, Wong Chin Foo, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, and Sui Sin Far reinvented medieval traditions to promote social change. Contemporary Asian, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and multiracial artists embrace diverse pasts to build better futures.

Empires and Communities in the Post-Roman and Islamic World, C. 400-1000 CE - Oxford Scholarship Online Find in Library Find in WorldcatEmpires and Communities in the Post-Roman and Islamic World, C. 400-1000 CERutger Kramer and Walter PohlAbstractThis book deals with how empires affect smaller communities such as ethnic groups, religious communities, and local or peripheral populations. It raises the question of how these different types of community were integrated into larger imperial edifices and in which contexts the dialectic between empires and particular communities caused disruption. How did religious discourses or practices reinforce (or subvert) imperial pretenses? How were constructions of identity affected? How were Egyptians accommodated under Islamic rule, Yemenis included in an Arab identity, Aquitanians integrated into the Carolingian Empire, Jews into the Fātimīd caliphate? Why did the dissolution of Western Rome and the Abbasid caliphate leave different types of polities in their wake? How was the Byzantine Empire preserved in the seventh century; how did the Franks construct theirs in the ninth? How did events in early medieval Rome and Constantinople promote social integration in both a local and a broader framework? Focusing on the post-Roman Mediterranean, the book deals with these questions from a comparative perspective. It considers political structures in the Latin West, Byzantium, and the early Islamic world in a period exceptionally well suited for studying the expansive and erosive dynamics of empires and their interaction with smaller communities. By never adhering to a single overall model and avoiding Western notions of empire, this volume combines individual approaches with collaborative perspectives. The chapters are in-depth studies written in full awareness of the other contributions; taken together, they constitute a major contribution to the advancement of comparative studies on premodern empires.

In medieval France, the collaboration between local communities and greater authorities grants us unusual insight into the period's concept of madness. The mentally ill posed a unique challenge to the law, and, by examining how subjects and officials worked together to define and contain mad individuals, this book analyses the development of that law and the interaction between local and regional communities. The author argues that this struggle often strengthened communities and proto-national identities.
